Without further fuss lets get on to the review of The Curious Charms Of Arthur Pepper.

Book : The Curious Charms Of Arthur Pepper

Author : Phaedra Patrick

Publisher : Harper Collins

About the Author : Phaedra Patrick has worked as a stained glass artist, film festival organiser and communications manager. She lives in Saddleworth with her husband and son. This book is her debut novel.

Plot : Now I am not going to give away all the story and spoil the book for you. But I will be just giving you an insight into the story.

The story revolves around Arthur who is 69 years old and lost his wife an year ago. He couldn't bear the terrible loss and is depressed. So he follows a routine everyday like wearing same clothes, eating at a particular time, watering Frederica and hiding from his neighbour. All this doesn't change until he finds a bracelet in his wife's closet. From then, he wants to know about the story of his wife's bracelet and the charms attached to it. Like an adventurer Arthur goes to different countries to find the secret life of his wife and discovers new person in himself.

Review : Just like any other family fiction novels, The Curious Charms Of Arthur Pepper is interwoven with seemingly believable characters. But the book has its own charm which stands out from other books of this genre. This book was truly refreshing, it was a simple read nothing complex. It gives us a glimpse of the rural life in UK  an insight of old people, and the thoughts of a widower. The book is never boring. Arthur constantly is on the move to know about the charms and is thrilling in a way. This book also emphasises on the importance o travel. Travel is often seen as a comfort and luxury, but it doesn't have to be. Arthur broke the monotony by travelling, he met many new people and explored and broadened his horizons. Each place and each person has thought him new thins which he could never learn sitting at home. This book is all about self-realisation rather than anything else. Arthur at the age of 69 , gets out of the boring routine and depression. He becomes fearless and happy at the end. He starts liking his neighbours and builds a good bond with his daughter and son. He has become more selfless and free-spirited than ever. He has become brave, and could live happily even without Miriam. He started finding joy without his wife. He appreciated everyone's efforts and has become more considerate

Therefore if you want a good family book with some elements of thriller and a feel-good and satisfying end, then this is the book you want to read. The writing of Phaedra is pretty easy and she has her own charm and created a niche for herself in the world of literature.

My Rating : The book speaks for itself and easily scores a 3.5 out of 5.

Final words : Charming, lovable and heart-warming tale. An easy read for you mind as well as your heart.

See you all in the next blog post.
XOXO
